[Oct 31] From the Summit on the Future of Public Housing: The Policy Framework

The Future of Public Housing - Beginning in June 2008, Reno & Cavanaugh has participated in the Summit on the Future of Public Housing, an effort initiated by the Council of Large Public Housing Authorities and funded by the Housing Authority Insurance Group to develop a consensus policy framework for reinvesting in and sustaining public housing over the next decade.  This effort, extraordinary in its own way, brought together a wide range of organizations to forge a new paradigm for the preservation of public housing.  Steve Holmquist, of R&C, was the principal author of the Policy Framework endorsed by this diverse group of housing providers and advocates. The framework provides a new reinvestment strategy along with a restructuring of the public housing portfolio and will provide a foundation on which the new administration can build new and better public housing policies. Injunction Against HUD - Judge Reggie Walton (U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia) issued a preliminary injunction against HUD, enjoining it from enforcing the debarment of commissioners of the Harrisburg Housing Authority.  Lee Reno and Sarah Molseed of Reno & Cavanaugh and Mona Lyons of the Law Office of Mona Lyons represent the Plaintiff commissioners in the case.  Please follow the preceding link to the Memorandum Opinion and Docket Text.
[July 8] R&C Client Work Ohio Supreme Court rules in favor of housing authority in "hostile living environment" fair housing case - The housing authority's position was supported by an amicus curie brief prepared by R&C attorneys on behalf of several industry groups.  For more information on the case and the decision please see click the preceding link.

Lee Reno Assumes Role of Managing Member
Lee Reno, a founding member of the firm, assumed the role of managing member on July 1, 2008.  Lee has served stints as managing member of the firm over its 31 year history, most recently from 1999 to 2001.  He takes over for Megan Glasheen, who has served as managing member for the past 4 years.
[July 1] NAHRO Taps Three R&C Attorneys for LIHTC Training
R&C attorneys Dwayne Barrett, Julie McGovern, and Martin Walsh have been tapped by the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) to provide in-depth training on the intricacies of the low income housing tax credit program.  Working closely with NAHRO staff, the R&C attorneys have designed an interactive program that makes learning about the low income housing tax credit fun.  The next training is in Nashville July 23-24, 2008.

[May 23] Attorney Elected to the ABA Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development On May 22, 2008, Julie McGovern was elected to the governing committee of the ABA Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development (the "Forum").  The Forum provides a myriad of services for its members including regular conferences, a list serve on affordable housing topics, and the Journal on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law.  Julie will serve as co-chair for the Forum's annual conference in May of 2009.
[May 15] Opportunities for Private Developers Seeking to Partner with PHAs and Nonprofits
Jennifer Alpha participated in a panel discussion on opportunities for private developers seeking to partner with public housing authorities and nonprofit organizations.  Bob Greer of The Michaels Development Company, Ed Lowndes of the Housing Authority of Kansas City, Missouri, and Deborah Williard of the Foundation for Affordable Housing were a part of the presentation.  The panel shared success stories and discussed the benefits of and important considerations in public/private and non-profit/for-profit partnerships in the development and operation of affordable housing.

R&C Opens Nashville, TN Office
